Tyson Fury was in talks to defend his belt against Anthony Joshua, 32, who is coming off consecutive losses to Usyk. But negotiations broke down leading to Fury confirming a fight against Derek Chisora instead.
Anthony Joshua's team had accepted Tyson Fury's offer of a 60-40 purse split to fight at Cardiff's Principality Stadium for the world title on Saturday 3rd December 2022. A statement from AJ's promoter confirmed the agreement today, saying '258 and Matchroom Boxing can confirm, on behalf of Anthony Joshua, that we accepted all terms presented to us by Fury's team for a fight Dec 3rd'
Joshua was on the surprising end of a callout from Fury, who is not willing to wait around for Oleksandr Usyk to return next year. A date in early November was initially put on the table but Joshua could only return by December at the earliest. Both teams accepted the date of Saturday 3rd December, and a contract had been set to be signed.
Since then negotiations broke down and the WBC and lineal world champion Tyson Fury defended his crown against long-standing rival Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday December 3 instead.
