Anthony Joshua was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but has now triggered a rematch clause in his attempt to win back the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight world titles he lost to the Ukrainian in September 2021.
Usyk dominated the first fight from the first bell with a sublime performance in front of 67,000 fans in London. Scores of 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113 were just reward after a sensational display from the unbeaten Usyk, who becomes only the third fighter after Evander Holyfield and David Haye to win world titles at cruiserweight and heavyweight.
All attention now turns to the rematch as AJ tried to reclaim the belts before he can attempt a unification bout with Tyson Fury later in 2022. The rematch is expected to take place in England in June this year, after being pushed back from the originally planned April date due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Usyk is understood to have now crossed the border into Poland and will soon start training to face Joshua again. Earlier on Wednesday, the Brit posted a picture of himself wearing a Polska [Poland] shirt, seemingly referencing this.
Joshua's promoter Hearn is very optimistic that the rematch will happen in June. Hearn said: 'They said they would make their decision and this is their decision, he's going for it. AJ iss over the moon. He turned down a lot of money not to step aside and then he might not have got the fight without the money.
TicketPort believes 18th June 2022 is currently the most likely date for the Usyk rematch. Register your interest below to receive all the latest ticket news on the rematch!
